Brunswick, Pender gas stations get letters amid NC Fuel Check complaints

SOUTHEASTERN N.C. (WECT) – Attorney Jeff Jackson says that his office has followed up on 51 consumer complaints about gas stations since launching N.C. Fuel Check.

North Carolina’s 41-cent-per-gallon tax on gasoline and diesel is suspended from Oct. 10 through Nov. 30 under a law signed by Gov. Josh Stein in October.

Jackson says retailers must pass the savings on to drivers and launched N.C. Fuel Check so drivers can report retailers they believe are not doing so.

Two gas stations in southeastern North Carolina, one in Brunswick County and one in Pender County, are among those that received letters about potentially failing to pass along savings from the state’s temporary gas tax suspension.

“North Carolina drivers have been our eyes and ears, and now we’re following up on their reports,” said Attorney General Jeff Jackson. “We’re now seeing broad compliance with the law from gas stations, but we’re taking a closer look where we need to.”

Gas stations in Alleghany, Avery, Buncombe, Burke, Cherokee, Chowan, Clay, Cumberland, Currituck, Dare, Davidson, Durham, Franklin, Gaston, Guilford, Halifax, Iredell, Jones, Mecklenburg, Montgomery, Onslow, Person, Robeson, Rockingham, Union, Washington, Watauga and Wilson counties also received letters.

Gas stations in Madison, Buncombe, Forsyth, Guilford, Nash, Onslow and Wake counties were referred to the Department of Agriculture.

Drivers can report gas stations they believe are breaking the law online or by calling 1-877-5-NO-SCAM.
