Michael Sanft, whose defense of self-described Los Angeles gang leader Duane “Keffe D” Davis, who was convicted of killing Tupac Shakur making national headlines, was found dead. The 54-year-old lawyer’s cause of death has not been determined.
The trial was the subject of a Los Angeles long-form last month.
Sanft was a longtime Las Vegas area attorney who argued that Davis, who was protected by a federal immunity deal for decades after Shakur’s murder, was “full of crap” when he admitted in repeated interviews with law enforcement, and in his memoir about being the shot-caller for the South Side Compton Crips, that he plotted the megastar’s murder on the Las Vegas Strip. Davis was sentenced to 40 years to life in October.

He also represented former Las Vegas City Councilmember Michele Fiore, who was found guilty at her federal trial for funneling money from charitable and political causes for her personal use. Fiore, a one-time Nevada gubernatorial candidate, falsely claimed she was raising money to memorialize police officers who lost their lives in the line of duty, but instead spent the money on herself. Fiore was later pardoned by President Donald Trump.
