MONUMENT, Colo. (KRDO) -- A local Army Sergeant Major had his mortgage paid off and accessibility renovations done to his home as part of work through the Tunnel to Towers Foundation.

According to the Tunnel to Towers Foundation, Army Sergeant Major Daniel Hendrix received the mortgage payments and renovations as part of the foundation's Smart Home Program. They say the program helps create more accessible, mortgage-free smart homes for injured veterans and first responders.

"It's like my home has doubled in size, now that I can navigate my entire home," SGM Hendrix said in a press release. "It feels like life just got easier, even if now I don't have an excuse not to help with the laundry anymore."

SGM Hendrix enlisted in the U.S. Army in 1993 and served for over 20 years, including deployments to Bosnia, Cuba, Saudi Arabia and Iraq, according to officials. He was injured in a parachute accident in 2012 that ended with the amputation of his left leg below the knee.

"I loved being part of the world's strongest team and serving something greater than my own self-interest," SGM Hendrix said. "Most of all, I cherish the relationships I built with my fellow soldiers throughout my career."

SGM Hendrix was given the news about the Smart Home Program in 2025 during a pre-game ceremony at Citi Field.

"I was in shock for a while...the mortgage getting paid alone is a life changer; it means so many less restrictions for me and my family," SGM Hendrix said in a press release.

The Tunnel to Towers Foundation says SGM Hendrix's home was remodeled to help improve accessibility. That included renovating a downstairs bathroom, creating an accessible door to lead to the deck, modifying the laundry room, installing a stair lift and adding a generator for emergencies.

Tunnel to Towers says the home also now has smart-home technology to allow the family to control things like lighting and home security through an app.
