MATTHEWS, Ind. — A man accused in two domestic violence incidents in Grant County was arrested in Ohio and returned to Indiana, where he is being held without bond, the Grant County Sheriff’s Office said.

Marty L. Banter, 53, of Marion, was arrested in Mason, Ohio, on active warrants from Grant County, according to the sheriff’s office. Detectives were returning him to Indiana after he waived extradition during a court proceeding Thursday afternoon.

Deputies responded to a domestic violence call just before 5:45 a.m. Thursday in the 1000 block of Massachusetts Ave. in Matthews, a Grant Count town of 480 people. The sheriff’s office said a woman told deputies her estranged husband had entered a store where the woman works, attacked her with a baseball bat, and chased her with a knife. She was treated for her injuries at Marion Health hospital.

The sheriff’s office said Banter drove away in a silver 2007 Chevrolet pickup truck before deputies arrived.

A warrant had already been issued in connection with an earlier domestic violence incident at the same store on Oct. 23, the sheriff’s office said. During that incident, Banter reportedly pointed a loaded handgun at her and threatened her before leaving the store.

Grant County Circuit Court issued warrants Oct. 30, with bond set at $20,000. The charges listed in those warrants are low-level felony intimidation with a deadly weapon and low-level felony pointing a loaded firearm.

Grant County Prosecutor Scott Hunt filed additional charges Thursday, according to the sheriff’s office: a top-level felony attempted murder; two counts of low-level felony intimidation; two counts of low-level felony domestic battery with a deadly weapon; and a count of low-level felony strangulation.
