Measure FD Passes, Bringing New Funding to LAFD

Posted

Los Angeles voters have approved Measure FD, an initiative to increase the city’s sales tax by 0.5%, which goes toward funding the Los Angeles Fire Department.

The measure, which passed with 53.7% of voters in favor, will raise the city’s sales tax rate from 10.25% to 10.75%. Angelenos voted in support of the additional funding following years of concerns surrounding the department’s resources, staffing and ability to respond to emergencies across the city.

According to Fund LA Fire, the campaign group behind the measure, the additional funding will support a number of improvements aimed at enhancing emergency response throughout Los Angeles. These include reducing emergency response times, upgrading and renovating fire stations, purchasing additional firefighting equipment and vehicles and hiring more firefighters and paramedics.

The campaign’s official website states the measure will help  “power emergency response times when just a few seconds can mean the difference between life and death,” further emphasizing the importance of additional resources when responding to life-threatening emergencies, including the wildfires Los Angeles has experienced in recent years.

Dry brush and overgrown vegetation have become major concerns in California’s ongoing battle against wildfires, as its dry, brittle nature can provide fuels that allow fires to ignite and spread more rapidly. With such brush often providing an extensive fuel source across fire-prone areas, firefighters can face the challenge of containing fires that spread faster than crews can reach and suppress them.

Measure FD also directs additional funding toward brush clearance and vegetation management, aimed at tackling these risks before conditions escalate into larger and more destructive fires.

Fund LA Fire received support from several local officials and organizations, including Mayor-Elect Nithya Raman. The growing concern surrounding wildfire safety has reached all levels of city leadership, from local residents to elected city officials — with CAL FIRE reporting 6,324 wildland fires and 3,040 structure fires as of Oct. 26.

With the measure expected to take effect as early as April 2027, the additional funding could improve the safety and quality of life for Los Angeles residents while providing firefighters with the resources needed to better protect the communities they serve.
