Tight end Nick Townsend set to miss rest of season with knee injury

Texas sophomore tight end Nick Townsend will miss the remainder of the 2026 season due to an ongoing knee injury further aggravated in practice this week, according to 247Sports.

Townsend missed games against UTSA and Tennessee earlier in the season with a knee injury, but he was able to return and play through the month of October. However, last weekend’s matchup against Mississippi State — during which he logged two receptions for four total yards — would end up being his final showing of the season.

Townsend’s impact on the stat sheet has been fairly limited during his past two years as a Longhorn, but one of two touches he recorded last season was a rushing touchdown against Texas A&M in the Longhorns’ Lonestar Showdown victory.

This season, he accumulated 31 yards on six receptions.

His absence also means a hit to the depth of Texas’ tight end room, an unfortunate reality given their importance in this team’s blocking effort.

Graduate tight end Michael Masunas has been a critical component within this year’s tight end room, as have sophomore Emaree Winston and senior Spencer Shannon. With Townsend out of the equation, these three players could be expected to shoulder a heavier burden both in terms of blocking and pass catching.

Townsend is also the third Longhorn to endure a season-ending injury in the past two weeks — senior offensive tackle Trevor Goosby suffered a knee injury that will sideline him through the remainder of 2026, and it was recently revealed that junior running back Hollywood Smothers played his last snap of the season against Mississippi State due to an injury.

Texas’ roster is banged up, and the team will have to look for different players to step up throughout this final stretch of Southeastern Conference play.
